Turnkey leak survey execution for gas distribution and transmission operators — from advanced mobile leak detection (AMLD) to traditional walking surveys, delivered on schedule and audit-ready.

Natural Gas Leak Survey Services

Surveys & Analysis, Inc. is a national leak survey contractor with one specialty and zero distractions: locating natural gas leaks on distribution and transmission systems. Natural gas leak survey services for more than 85 years, gas utilities across the continental United States have trusted S&A to execute leakage surveys required under 49 CFR §§192.706 and 192.723, meet compliance deadlines with room to spare, and deliver documentation that stands up to PHMSA and state commission audits.

The New PHMSA Leak Rule Changed the Game. We’re Built for It.

PHMSA’s Gas Pipeline Leak Detection and Repair Final Rule — implementing the PIPES Act of 2020. This raises the bar on leakage survey frequency, advanced leak detection technology, leak grading, and repair timelines. For every Part 192-regulated operator. Whether you’re standing up an Advanced Leak Detection Program (ALDP), supplementing your in-house survey workforce, or outsourcing leak survey entirely, S&A brings the qualified personnel, instrumentation, and reporting infrastructure to keep your system compliant.

Services Offered by Surveys & Analysis, Inc.

Continual Monitoring of Transmission and Distribution Assets

Every service below maps to a requirement your compliance team already tracks. S&A executes the field work, the analysis, and the documentation. So your leakage survey records under 49 CFR §§192.706 and 192.723, and your patrol records under §§192.705 and 192.721, are complete, consistent, and audit-ready.

Turnkey AMLD Execution

Advanced Mobile Leak Detection is the centerpiece of PHMSA’s Advanced Leak Detection. Program (ALDP) expectations under the Gas Pipeline Leak Detection and Repair rule. S&A delivers AMLD as a complete program, not just a truck with a sensor:

  • AMLD mobile survey services — Vehicle-mounted, high-sensitivity methane detection surveys of distribution and transmission assets. Executed to your route plans and survey intervals.
  • AMLD survey analysis and reporting — Data processing, prioritization, and deliverables formatted for your compliance records and GIS systems.
  • LISA / Indication leak survey validation — Field investigation and validation of Leak Indication Search Areas, closing the loop between AMLD indications and graded, documented leaks.

Leak Pin-Pointing

  • Traditional leak surveys — Instrumented mobile and walking leakage surveys meeting the intervals of §192.723 for distribution systems. Business districts at least annually, not exceeding 15 months; outside business districts on the code-required cycle for your pipe types and §192.706 for transmission lines.
  • Leak re-evaluations — Scheduled rechecks of open leaks. Support the leak grading and reevaluation timelines now codified in PHMSA’s leak rule.
  • QA/QC — Independent quality surveys behind in-house or contract crews to verify survey effectiveness and document it.

Core Survey Methods

  • Mobile survey — Efficient, instrumented coverage of large distribution footprints.
  • Walking survey — Foot-by-foot instrumented survey of mains and services, including business districts, congested areas, and locations inaccessible by vehicle.

Emergency & Specialty Response

  • Emergency odor response — Rapid investigation of odor calls and gas complaints in support of your emergency plan procedures under §192.615.

Inspection & Compliance Services

  • Atmospheric corrosion inspections — Inspection of exposed piping for atmospheric corrosion at the intervals required by §192.481 (onshore: each 3 calendar years, not exceeding 39 months).
  • Inside meter inspections — Inspection of inside meter sets and associated piping, including atmospheric corrosion evaluation of pipe inside buildings.
  • Valve inspection and maintenance — Inspection, servicing, and documentation of distribution key valves per §192.747 and transmission valves per §192.745 (each calendar year, not exceeding 15 months).

Specialty Surveys & Patrols

  • Substructure / subsurface surveys — Bar-hole and subsurface investigation to track gas migration and define leak extent.
  • Prepaving and blasting surveys — Pre-construction leak surveys before paving or blasting activity near gas facilities, protecting your system and documenting due diligence.
  • Uprate support surveys — Leak surveys before and during pressure increases in support of uprating programs under 49 CFR Part 192, Subpart K.
  • Bridge and railroad casing inspections — Inspection of cased crossings and exposed spans.
  • Exposed crossing patrols — Patrols of exposed pipeline at bridges, waterways, and other crossings in support of §§192.705 and 192.721 patrolling requirements.
  • Winter frost patrols — Seasonal patrols where frost heave and ground movement threaten pipe integrity.

Qualified People, Documented Work

Leak survey, investigation, and grading personnel must be qualified under 49 CFR Part 192, Subpart N (Operator Qualification).

About Surveys & Analysis Incorporated

Surveys & Analysis, Inc. is a national contractor specializing exclusively in natural gas leak surveys. For more than 85 years of continuous operation. We’ve helped gas distribution and transmission operators meet — and often set — the standards of the leak survey industry. S&A is a turnkey leak survey solution: qualified surveyors, calibrated instrumentation, scheduling, execution, QA/QC, and audit-ready reporting under one roof.

Specialization Is the Point

Leak survey is our passion and our only focus. Just as important, we understand that how and when we survey affects your maintenance schedules, repair crews, planning, and budgets. Our job is to make your compliance calendar boring — in the best possible way.

Our History

S&A’s roots stem back to the [1930s]. Our founder established Vegetation Surveys, Inc. in Northborough, Massachusetts, pioneering vegetation-indication leak survey — one of the earliest systematic methods of finding underground gas leaks. In 1967, the company became Surveys & Analysis, Inc. to reflect modern instrumented survey techniques. Today, headquartered in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, S&A has provided leak survey services to gas utilities in every state in the continental United States and has inspected the gas facilities of more than 45 million homes and businesses.
